The journey of plastic waste on Texel.

March 2021 until present

At the moment, we are investigating, on behalf of De Bolder and the Working Group ‘Texelse kunststof tot nadenken’, how plastic waste can be made into a product on Texel that brings the challenges of plastic pollution to the attention of visitors and residents of Texel.

Local sustainability initiatives - How do we deal with plastic waste?

February until Augustus 2020

Babet looked into the strategies used by local sustainability initiatives to reduce plastic waste along the Dutch coastlines. The results showed that a combination of picking litter, or creating something from litter and educating about litter has resulted in a new form of beach combing in order to reduce the plastic on the Dutch coastline.

The effects of rewilding in ‘het Hart van Drenthe’

April until Augustus 2020

Lisalou conducted research commissioned by ‘Staatsbosbeheer’ and the ‘Nationale Parken Bureau’ to understand how a monitoring system can assist in measuring natural development, and how this relates to the visitor experience.

(How) can we compensate travel emissions effectively?

April until Augustus 2020

Myrthe wrote an article for Green Destinations and the Good Travel Guide on how to effectively compensate for travel emissions. It is concluded that several issues are associated with conventional carbon compensation programs and that travellers and the tourism sector should therefore prioritise reducing travel emissions over its compensation.

Using single-use plastics while backpacking in Vietnam

Augustus 2019 until April 2020

Lisalou conducted research on how services and cultural and social structures in Vietnam affect backpackers’ choices concerning the use of single-use plastics in Ho Chi Minh City and the tropical island of Phu Quoc.

The development and implementation of the National Park Plus strategy

January and February 2019

During the master program Tourism, Society & Environment we participated in a research project commissioned by ‘Staatsbosbeheer’ to understand and improve the development of the National Park Plus strategy in the Drents Friese Wold.

What is the role of the World Surfing Reserve (WSR) program in the sustainable development of Huanchaco as a surfing destination?

August 2019 until April 2020

Myrthe conducted research on the WSR program in Huanchaco, an initiative of the American NGO Save the Waves Coalition, which is established to protect the local nature and culture. The research demonstrated the importance of involving a variety of stakeholder groups for a successful outcome.

How can we foster sustainable mobility in Malta?

May until Augustus 2019

During the master program Tourism, Society & Environment Lisalou and Myrthe participated in a research project for stimulating multi-modal transport in Malta. The goal of the project was to improve health, nature, environment, social equity and economy on the island. The research showed that a holistic approach including changes in infrastructure, law, collaboration and education is needed in order to create sustainable mobility.

Research project on sustainable fishery in Lisbon

Mei until Augustus 2019

During the master Tourism, Society & Environment Babet participated in a research project on sustainable fishery in Lisbon. First, the availability of sustainably caught fish was mapped, including the local population’s attitude towards this. The outcomes were used to build a campaign together with the Good Fish Foundation.

Santiago+de+Compostella

Cultural heritage in Santiago de Compostela

April 2019

In cooperation with students from Romania, France, Iceland and Spain, Babet and Lisalou participated in a project for PRO PEACE* in order to improve the collaboration for European Cultural Heritage and its relation to tourism.
